Koninginnedag / Queensday in Haarlem

Yesterday was the best Dutch National Holiday; Queensday or Koninginnedag. you would think that we are celebrating the Queens birthday, but what we dutchies are actually celebrating is the birthday of the (late) queen mom. When our current Queen Beatrix was crowned in 1980, this national holiday was her present to her mother.

Our nation loves our Royal Family and that’s why every year the whole nation puts on their orange t-shirts and we party our orange bums off every where. The Royal Family celebrates with us every year, by visiting 2 places in Holland which prepare a whole tour for the royals with performances, music and (old fashioned) games in which most royals also take part (as a queen lover, I always watch at least an hour of this on tv, screaming every minute “look a nice they are!” “Aren’t they just great!?!” which my boyfriends just ignores after say Yes, yes yeeheees…)

Anyway, we celebrated in the place we live in Haarlem, where loads of people (young and old) try to make a Euro or 2 by selling their goods on the free market, but there are also bands performing everywhere, and – my favorite, on the central square there is a kermis. Enough to do and see! This is the impression I made for you guys.

New Year in Scotland

blog scotland 14 - copyright @ LosAngelas

First of all Happy New Year to you all!!

Hope you a good time with your family and friends

It seems like it’s becoming a sort of tradition that in between my holiday and the new year, my blogging comes to a grinding stop. But I happy to start the new year with an post of a trip I made to Scotland

For the New Year my boyfriend & I went to Scotland to visit his family. We stayed in the west coast of Scotland in a small place called Lochgoilhead, a place small enough that they only have a shop for necessities a hotel, an Inn ( the Shore Inn, seen in the photo above) and and a parc with holiday homes.

The Lochgoilhead area is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by mountains and hills, it is a real outdoor place perfect for some photography. Unfortunately we had like only half an hour a day of dryness, the whole week. One morning when it wasn’t raining we took the dog for a walk, the loch was covered with what looked like black pebbles, but what were actually mussels.

Two times we took a trip to Inveraray, half an hour drive from Lochgoilhead, a slightly bigger place with cozy pubs and tearooms, and a couple of shops which sell scottish souvenirs and local arts and products. A nice place to visit, apparently in the summer it’s better when there is also the opportunity to visit a landhouse with supposedly beautiful gardens and a tearoom.

But always available is this incredible view.

All in all, this part of Scotland is best to be visited in summer when you have more a guarantee that the weather is better. But every holiday is what you make of it, I guess, in any case we had a good time up there.

While I’m away; my impression of Barcelona

Barcelona - Copyright LosAngelas

At the moment I am enjoying my holiday on Bali, and can not post anything. But in the meantime I would like to give you an impression of other places that I have visited in the past.

This is an impression of the time we visited Barcelona for a weekend in January 2009. Although we only stayed here for a couple of days, Barcelona is such a great city to visit, especially if you are a Gaudi lover like me. I remember that it was pretty cold when we were there, so there was no sitting on terraces and lying in parcs, but that did not mean that we did not enjoy ourselves.

Because we only had a couple of days we had to make choices from the many things which are there to be seen. We chose to visit Parc Guell, Casa Batlló. ( unfortunately Casa Mila was closed for some reason) and the Sagrada Familia. With it’s beautiful architecture, pretty streets and as much Gaudi as a person could take in, Barcelona is a lovely place to visit for a long weekend.

This is an impression of the time we visited Crete ( before they were almost broke or at least officialy) in August 2009. We stayed in a place called Rethymnon, which is an absolute beautiful and cozy place. Also we hired a car for three days, and traveled over the island. And Finally  we made a trip to the island of Santorini, which is, with it’s characteristic white and blue chalk houses are an aboslute must to visit.

on a crisp autumn day

And so there is a day in autumn when the day is crisp, the sun is shining and the day invites you to go and leave your house as you have to treat each of these days as is can be the last one of the year.

We decided to spend the day in our old neighbourhood, the Jordaan in Amsterdam, where we walked around the beautiful canals and had lunch on one of the many filled terraces.
