Dinner with L. Part l – dessert, flourless brownies

Finally I have made a successfull brownie attempt again!

First of all, my friend L & I have the tradition of cooking something together which neither of us has made before, and even though this was only the second time, both of us were so enthusiastic that we can already call it a tradition.

This time we made artichokes with 2 different dips  and a creamy risotto with turnip-tops and salmon. With 2 people in a small kitchen and recipes never tried before there was unfortunately to chance to take photos of the process unless you’re interested in a exploded kitchen… BUT, the dish was such a success that I made it a couple of days later for my bf, and this time with photos – which will follow later

However I was smart enough to make the desert in advance, and had plenty of time to take photos of these, delicious nutty brownies.

I decided on a making a flowerless brownie with extra nutty – walnuts and almonds.

For my 16cm bake tin, I have used the following ingredients, which was, as you can see still a bit too much, so additional muffin shapes had to be filled.

200 gr dark chocolate                       150 gr butter

30 gr cacao powder                              2 eggs

150 gr fine sugar               1/2 tbs baking powder

50 gr walnuts                    50 gr chopped almonds

For full recipes, maybe you can try this one by Nigella                                                           or this triple chocolate version by Martha Stewart

Serve with ice cream, enjoy!

No 3D chocolate printer? Get busy in the kitchen yourself!

Chocolate Cake - Copyright LosAngelas

*** update : visit this post at my moved blog : HERE ***

Today, I sat in my car standing in non-moving traffic when the weather showed nothing but depression on my front window, I heard something that cheered me up: the first commercial 3D chocolate printer in on sale. Amazing, technology is not standing still, and apparently this is what it is leading to. Last year I already saw the news about “normal” 3D printer, but now there is also a specific chocolate version; for more information and movies go to this page.

If a chocolate 3D printer in not in your budget at the moment, the alternative is: get into the kitchen and get busy!

On request by my sister I made this delicious chocolate cake, for the and her work mates, which there better be many of because this cake was, like the last one, enormous. For the cake I used the base of this Bakerella cake, like I did the last time I have multiplied all ingredients times 1,5.

For the frosting I used this recipe of Nigella’s Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake, which goes perfect with this cake, and is quick and easy to make

The strawberries are my own addition

Enjoy!

Have you ever visited the Bakerella website? I’m not sure if I should I advice you to go there, because it’s an internet trap! Once you there it’s hard to browse away from it… there I found a recipe for this delicious double double chocolate cake, which Bakerella calls “just a cake”. Since my last chocolate post was while ago, this was for sure on my “to bake list” but it’s not one of those things you bake on a tuesday evening for you and you lover.

Therefore last saturday was the perfect opportunity, when a dear friend of mine celebrated       her birthday/farewell party, as she got a job in Miami (grrrrrrr…!) and had to move away from Amsterdam. And so I dove in the kitchen to make this monstrous chocolate cake. This recipe is surprisingly easy to follow, and has three stages. to make sure my cake was big enough for this occasion, I used 1,5 times the ingredients and used a 28 cm bakepan. and it was big alright! what do you expect with almost a kilo of sugar (or maybe a bit more) and a small mountain of butter… when you’re making it you think “I’m not gonna take a bite of this now that I know how much is actually in it).

But this cake is truly delicious! (or everybody at the party was just very nice to me) plus it looks impressive, I added some red foodcoloring to the buttercream, for a pink effect. this is an absolute must try for every chocolate/cake/sugar-fan.

So enjoy, but beware of 2 warnings:

– Only enter the bakerella website when you know you have enough time.

– Only make this for a group of people, or you might end up eating the whole thing yourself.

Monday Brownie Blues & A vitamin power juice

mondaybrownies4 - copyright @ LosAngelasLast Monday was a public holiday, my boyfriend went to play golf for the afternoon.

The house was quiet and it rained softly, a whole afternoon to be filled. I put Norah Jones and decided to start off with a vitamin-power-juice, I always put throw in something different depending on what I have in the fridge or freezer, here is what’s in this one.

5 oranges – always a good basis

2 red grapefruits – I just love their tangy fresh flavor

1 lemon – because they burst with vitamin C

Handful of blueberries – just because I had some left from the pancakes

handful of raspberries (frozen) – they add a fresh taste, but also gives it nice pinkie color

handful of mango pieces (frozen) – I always add mango, cause of it’s nice sweet taste and it add a thickness too

For that evening I was going over to my friend N for dinner, so I wanted to bake dessert, extra dark brownies with pecans and the last of the blueberries. I used darkest chocolate I could find.

As you can see, they look pretty good, I can tell you that they smelled pretty good too…. unfortunately they didn’t taste pretty delicious, too dry and a bit too bitter too….. This calls for a remake!!!

I did found this recipe, for dark brownies if you would like to make them yourself.

Enjoy & Good Luck

Blueberry breakfast pancakes (and some with chocolate)

blueberry pancakes 1 Copyright LosAngelas

Every time I when I browse through other blogs or cooking/recipe site and I see these pancakes I think “oooh, I really have to make these one morning”

Well, this morning was a slow morning and it was raining, the prefect blueberry pancake moment. Of course it would not have been me, if I would not also slipped in some chocolate somewhere….

These are extremely easy to make, what you need it is:

200 gr selfraining flower                 a pinch of salt

1 tsp baking powder                           1 egg

300 ml milk                                          a tbsp of butter

a handful of blueberries                    a handful of raisins

some finely chopped chocolate        butter of oil for frying

The full recipe I got on the BBC food website: but when I made to batter I divided it two bowls, in one I added the blueberries and the other the chocolate and raisins.

So easy to make and absolutely delicious!

Enjoy, and have a nice weekend!!

And now, something with chocolate again

The last time the last time I blogged was the last time I baked… both too long ago.

so last friday night I went to the supermarket and made sure that for the coming 2 months I would not have any excuse,

by buying a whole pile of butter, about 1,5 kilos of chocolate and more, actually  too much sugar.

If we would to be snowed in, which would quite impossible since is June and warmer then it’s ever been,

we could at least survive on brownies until the rescue teams would come and look for us.

So it’s sunday afternoon; time to start!

Two weeks ago I tried making these lovely looking cake balls with chocolate and cocos, For which I had a recipe from Delicious Magazine.

Unfortunately it was an enormous disaster, which I don’t want to go into too much detail – but just picture like something exploded in my kitchen, and it totally put me off.

But I had to give it another shot… and everything went smoothly, even with all the pictures I took while making it.

It was still a lot of hassle, but I pulled it off! My test-subject (my BF) was blown away, and had four.

For all the effort and hassle, that’s the best compliment you can get!

Unfortunately the recipe for these are not on the delicious website.

Red-riding-hood-like present (celebration in the park)

For the fifth time, our friend C. celebrated his birthday in a park in Amsterdam. Since he lives in an apartment in the city centre, he does not own a garden,

and so decided to invite everybody for a BBQ in a nearby park. So far we have always been lucky with the weather, and with a couple of beers, wine and a BBQ it has always been a great day.

I took this opportunity to try out some different recipes for sweet deliciousness, which I haven’t tried, since my BF can only handle so many brownies at once.

And celebrating in the park, a Red Riding Hood  themed present seemed in place.

with “fourless-yet-fudgy brownies” from Linda Collisters Brownie Bliss

“Chocolate-Meringueclouds” from Alisa Morov’s Meringues

and my own recipes for cupcakes.

mmm….. Enjoy! ( I did)

We can’t eat unless it’s blogworthy

*** update : visit this post at my moved blog : HERE ***

Everybody knows Nigella Lawson, the domestic goddess, she makes the most delicious looking sweet things!

So, when we Recently we had some friends over for a sunday dinner, I decided to make her chocolate and raspberry pavlova for dessert.

before we could cut even one piece, I had everybody wait for me to take some pictures, as I said, we can’t eat it unless it’s blogworthy….

so this time not a series, but a single photo, of what is a simple but really nice and sweet dessert.

the recipe you can find in Nigella’s Forever Summer, and there is even a clip of it on you tube.

Enjoy, and if you’re gonna make this, have fun!

Brownies!

After the happy chocolate cookies I made, I wanted to spread the happiness further with Classic Fudge Brownies, from Linda Collisters “Brownie Bliss” one of my few purchases from my London trip.

There is just something about baking with chocolate, it almost has something sexy… if you know what I mean,

if you don’t I hope you still enjoy these photos!

Last night it was my boyfriends E’s very fancy birthday party. So, instead of buying a normal card or flowers I wanted to surprise him with home-baked chocolate cookies.

I used the recipe for double chocolate cookies from the Hummingbird Cookbook.

The cookies are surprisingly easy to make, and a guaranteed success to whom ever will receive them
